What Are Paint Sheens, & how do they affect me?

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

Paint sheen refers to the level of gloss or shine in a paint finish. It's an important aspect of choosing the right paint for a particular surface or room, as different sheens offer different advantages and disadvantages. The most common paint sheens include flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. Here's a quick overview of each:

  1. Flat or Matte: This sheen has little to no shine and is great for concealing imperfections on walls and ceilings. However, it's less durable and more challenging to clean compared to higher sheens.

  2. Eggshell: This sheen has a slight, smooth shine and is more washable than flat or matte finishes. It's a good compromise between a flat finish and a higher gloss.

  3. Satin: Satin has a bit of sheen and is more washable than eggshell. It's commonly used in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

  4. Semi-Gloss: This sheen has a noticeable shine and is highly durable and easy to clean. It's often used for trim, doors, and cabinets.

  5. High-Gloss: High-gloss has the highest level of shine and is extremely durable and easy to clean. It's typically used on surfaces that require a sleek and polished appearance, such as doors and trim. NOT RECCOMENDED FOR DRYWALL

The choice of paint sheen can affect you in several ways:

  1. Aesthetic Appeal: The sheen you choose contributes to the overall look and feel of a room. Higher sheens can make a space feel more modern ,while lower sheens create a more relaxed and subtle appearance.

  2. Durability and Cleanability: Higher sheens, like semi-gloss and high-gloss, are more durable and easier to clean. This makes them suitable for areas prone to moisture, stains, or heavy use.

  3. Surface Imperfections: Flat or matte sheens are effective at hiding surface imperfections, while higher sheens may highlight them. Consider the condition of the surface you're painting when choosing the sheen.
